A van usually carries more metal than a car of the same age, and the working parts off a common panel van keep their value because owners still run the model on the road. That is why a tired van often prices a little stronger than people expect once the actual vehicle is assessed rather than a rough band quoted down the phone.

The DVLA side of scrapping a van

When a van is sold for scrap it goes to a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility, and the DVLA must be told the vehicle has left your hands. We handle that notification at uplift so the van stops being your liability the day it is collected.

The V5C logbook keeps things quickest, and you keep the yellow "sell, transfer or part-exchange" section for your own records. If the logbook is lost we can still buy the van, because the treatment facility can register the destruction without it.

Paying cash for scrap vehicles is against the law in Scotland under the Air Weapons and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2015, which allows only electronic transfer or a crossed cheque. A buyer waving cash for your van is breaking that rule, which tells you how they treat the rest.
